First-visit guide

New to THC? Start here.

A plain-English guide for your first visit to a hemp dispensary: what to bring, what to ask, and how to start low and go slow.

The guide

Your first visit, step by step

Updated October 27, 2026

1. Bring a valid photo ID

You must be 21 or older to buy hemp THC products in Texas, and we check ID on every visit. A driver's license, state ID, passport or military ID works. Expired IDs don't.

2. Tell us what you're after

You don't need to know any terms. Tell staff three things: whether you've used THC before, how you'd like to take it (eat it, or something with little or no THC), and your budget. We'll pull a few options and explain the labels.

3. Understand the label

  • Milligrams (mg) per piece or serving is the strength of one dose.
  • Milligrams per package is the total. A pack of 10 pieces at 5 mg each holds 50 mg.
  • THC vs CBD. THC is the part that makes you feel high. CBD isn't intoxicating. Some products have both. See CBD vs THC.
  • Lab report (COA). A QR code that links to a third-party lab test. Here's how to read one.

4. Start low and go slow

The most common first-timer mistake is taking too much, too fast, especially with edibles. Eating THC can take 30 minutes to two hours to feel and lasts longer than people expect. Ask for the lowest-milligram product we carry, try a small amount, and wait well over an hour before deciding whether to have more.

5. Plan where you'll be

  • Try it the first time at home, somewhere comfortable.
  • Don't drive or operate machinery after using THC.
  • Don't mix with alcohol, especially the first time.
  • Store products locked and away from children and pets. Gummies look like candy.

6. If you feel too high

Stay calm, sit somewhere safe, drink water and wait; it passes. If someone has trouble breathing, chest pain, or a child has eaten an edible, call 911 or Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222.

This guide is general information, not medical advice. If you take medication, are pregnant or nursing, or have a health condition, talk to your doctor first.
